VasectomyA vasectomy is a safe, simple and effective birth control method and is considered painless or nearly painless. A typical vasectomy is done in our office in approximately 30 minutes using local anesthetic or at the Southwest Ohio Ambulatory Surgery Center using general anesthetic. After your initial consultation, you and Dr. Gaker will determine what is best for you. When a conventional or traditional vasectomy, the surgeon uses a scalpel to make one or two incisions in the skin or the scrotum to access and expose the tiny vas deferens tubes from each testicle. The vas deferns is lifted, cut and tied or cauterized. The tubes are then returned to the scrotal sac and the incisions are closed with a few stitches. Post operative recovery time for a vasectomy is generally 2 - 3 days. You will be required to rest your feet up for the first 48 hours with no heavy lifting or exertion. Ice packs and analgesics are recommended. You may resume sexual activity as early as 72 hours but you will not be considered sterile for several weeks and should use an alternative form of birth control. It takes as many as 20 ejaculations before any remaining sperm is released. In fact, sperm can remain in the semen for three to six months following your vasectomy. You will be asked to bring in semen samples to determine that they are free of any sperm. A detailed pre and post vasectomy instruction booklet will be provided. Most insurance companies cover the cost of having a vasectomy. You should contact your insurance company prior to scheduling your initial consultation to determine your specific plan's coverage. When it is covered, we will bill your insurance company for you. When it is not covered or when a patient is not insured, we will work with you to create a payment plan that is reasonable. We do offer a discount when payment is made in full prior to the vasectomy. |
