A Word from Dr. Gaker
Greetings!
You may wonder why you just received a miniature stapler and a copy of "Travel Light". The entire belongings left from my dear son, Edward, fit into two plastic buckets. That's all he had, and it's all he needed to blossom as he did. Among the items was a small stapler just like the one today. It sits right in front of my microscope at work so that I am confronted and challenged by it 40 or more times each day. It is a reminder to travel as he did and prompted me the revelation to Travel Light.
I hope you read the piece several times and are encouraged to pass through the holiday as he did, as light as possible. In so doing you may do as he did and sleep on granite for three days, as he didn't want to waste space for a pad on a kayak adventure. But may you also be able to enjoy the feeling of being full alive and engaged for the next adventure such that your days may be as rich as his.
God Bless You.
Your Friend,
Douglas Gaker

Travel Light
The Christmas message is really about surrender. Just as Herod built a massive fortress near Bethlehem (just in case his reign was threatened), we each build personal defenses and strive with evil and things beyond our control. In Daniel's vision, it says that Satan will be destroyed but "not by human power." So it is with our own frailties.
It is so easy yet so many miss it. Just as Jesus was born within sight of Herod's fortress, so He waits within sight of each of us. Jesus was named because He will "save the people from their sins." That's why He was born.
In actuality, He was born to save us from ourselves. And our real destiny and purpose is fulfilled when we give our burdens to Him so that we can travel as light as possible, always willing to hear direction from the Savior that is easily within sight.
Don't miss it. Your massive fortress will not really defend you. It will fall into ruin just as Herod's fortress did. The word, the life, the life changing power that came at Christmas is alive and still of the same power.
Hallelujah.
I surrendered.
And I will again tomorrow.
I want to travel just like my dear Edward did, as light as possible.
